It is a non-manipulative technique for treatment of pain, limited movement associated with injury, misalignment and bad posture. Gentle and controlled pressure is applied to specific nerve points that stimulate tension activity to cause change within and around a stressed muscle. The only tools required are the therapist’s middle fingers. This works on a neurofeedback loop and via the reflex arc.
The aim is to align joint structures and allow adjoining muscles to work at their optimum. This removes stress from ligaments, tendons and cartilage so that wear and tear is reduced and tensions and pain disappear. Patients feel “shifting” sensations during treatment plus other sensations of tingling and heat as the body adjusts.
After treatment, patients need to relax and have a hot bath, as muscles become achy as they respond to treatment. This can last for a day or two as the body settles into position and is a good sign that the treatment is working. Therefore no other treatment should be carried out for 48 hours afterwards.
What is it exactly?
Receiving a Treatment
When you first come for a treatment, your practitioner will take a full case history, which will include finding out about the pain you are currently experiencing and want may be causing it. They will then carry out a postural analysis, which may will also include some palpation to pinpoint problem areas.
After this, you will be asked to lie face down on a comfortable couch fully clothed. The only thing we may ask you to remove are your shoes and a belt if you are wearing one; just to ensure your comfort.
Next the practitioner will carry out the treatment which consists of just very light touch on specific areas of your body, starting at the pelvic region and ending at your head. Your practitioner may decide to offer extra points for specific problem areas but they will discuss these with you.
How does it feel?
Clients report all sorts of sensations whilst the treatment is progressing but it is all pleasant. Some points feel hot, others tingly or there may be a shifting sensation. Most of our clients drift off to sleep listening to relaxing music during the treatment and find it deeply relaxing.
Remedial Massage Therapy
Following a course of NSRT, your practitioner may book you in for some remedial massage. This is massage for neccesity rather than luxury as you may have tight muscles following years of misalignment. Remedial Massage is a manual therapy, which uses the massage and manipulation of the body's soft tissues to relieve pain and promote healing. They may include the use of trigger point therapy, stretching and muscle energy release techniques to leave you feeling fantastic!
